Flying After Dental Work: A Common Concern for Dental Tourists

One of the most frequently asked questions from patients considering dental tourism in Albania is: “Can I fly home after having dental work done?” The short answer is yes, but timing and precautions matter depending on the procedure.

Flying After Different Procedures

After Dental Implant Surgery

Wait 24–48 hours minimum. At Empire Dental, we schedule implant surgery on day 2 or 3 of your visit, leaving 2–3 days for recovery before your flight. Cabin pressure does not affect implants (they are solid, not hollow). You may experience slight swelling during the flight — take prescribed anti-inflammatories before boarding.

After Crown or Veneer Preparation

You can fly immediately. Crown and veneer work does not involve surgery. Temporary crowns protect your teeth during the flight. Return for permanent fitting once your lab work is complete.

After Tooth Extraction

Wait 24 hours minimum. A simple extraction typically causes minimal swelling. For surgical extractions or wisdom teeth, wait 48–72 hours. The key is ensuring the blood clot has formed and stabilised.

After Sinus Lift Surgery

Wait 7–10 days. A sinus lift involves the maxillary sinus, and cabin pressure changes can theoretically affect healing. We always schedule sinus lifts at the start of your visit to allow adequate recovery time.

Practical Tips for Your Return Flight

  • Take medication before boarding: Anti-inflammatories and painkillers as prescribed
  • Stay hydrated: Drink water throughout the flight. Avoid alcohol.
  • Avoid hard foods: Bring soft snacks if needed (yoghurt, smoothie)
  • Keep gauze handy: For extractions, have gauze available just in case
  • Chew gum or swallow: To equalise ear pressure (as you normally would)
  • Ice pack: If you have a cool pack, hold it against your cheek during the flight
