Tooth Extraction: When It Is Necessary and What to Expect

Sometimes a tooth simply cannot be saved. Severe decay, advanced gum disease, fractures or impacted wisdom teeth may require extraction. In Albania, extractions are performed by experienced oral surgeons using modern techniques, at a fraction of UK private costs.

Types of Extraction

Simple Extraction

For teeth that are visible above the gumline and can be removed with standard instruments. Performed under local anaesthetic, takes 15–30 minutes.

Surgical Extraction

For teeth that are broken below the gumline, partially erupted or impacted. May require a small incision and bone removal. Takes 30–60 minutes under local anaesthetic.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The most common surgical extraction. Wisdom teeth frequently become impacted (stuck), causing pain, infection or damage to adjacent teeth. We use CBCT 3D scanning to precisely map the tooth’s position relative to nerves and sinuses before extraction.

Aftercare Instructions

• First 24 hours: Bite gently on gauze, avoid hot food and drinks, do not rinse vigorously
• Days 1–3: Mild swelling is normal. Ice pack on the outside of the cheek, soft foods, prescribed painkillers
• Days 3–7: Swelling reduces, start gentle warm salt-water rinses, gradually return to normal diet
• Day 7–10: Full healing of soft tissue. Sutures dissolve or are removed.

Combining Extraction with Replacement

Many patients combine extraction with immediate implant placement in the same visit. This saves time and avoids bone loss. Ask us about immediate loading implants — a single visit where the tooth is extracted and an implant placed on the same day.
