Timing Matters More Than You Think
When patients plan a dental trip to Albania, they usually focus on the clinic, the treatment and the cost. But timing can make a significant difference to your overall experience. The month you choose affects your flight price, hotel cost, the weather during recovery, clinic availability and what you can do between appointments.
This guide breaks down every month so you can pick the window that works best for your budget, your treatment and your comfort.

The Best Months: April, May, September, October
If you have flexibility, these four months offer the optimal combination of weather, cost and clinic availability. Here is why they stand out:
April and May (Spring)
Tirana in spring is at its best. Temperatures range from 10 to 25°C, comfortable enough for walking between appointments and exploring the city. The parks around the Grand Park of Tirana and the Artificial Lake are green and pleasant. Outdoor cafes and restaurants reopen after winter.
From a dental tourism perspective, spring offers several advantages:
- Flight prices: Still in the shoulder season range (£40 to £90 return from London)
- Hotel prices: 4-star hotels in Blloku run €40 to €75 per night
- Clinic availability: Excellent. Dentists have fewer bookings than summer, so scheduling is flexible
- Recovery conditions: Mild temperatures are ideal for post-procedure recovery. Not too hot, not too cold
- Sightseeing: Perfect weather for Bunk'Art, the National History Museum, the New Bazaar and day trips to Kruja or Berat
September and October (Autumn)
Autumn in Tirana mirrors spring's advantages with slightly warmer temperatures in September (16 to 28°C) and pleasant mildness in October (11 to 22°C). The summer crowds have gone, prices drop back to shoulder rates, and clinics return to full capacity after any August reductions.
A bonus for September travellers: the Albanian Riviera beaches are still swimmable (sea temperature around 23 to 25°C), making it possible to combine dental treatment with a few days on the coast.
Summer: June to August
Summer works but has trade-offs. Here is an honest assessment:
June
June is the best summer month for dental tourism. Temperatures are warm but manageable (18 to 30°C). Flight and hotel prices are rising but have not peaked. Clinics are fully staffed. If you want to add a beach extension, June offers warm seas without the August crowds.
July and August
These are Tirana's hottest months, with temperatures regularly reaching 33 to 35°C. While air-conditioned clinics are comfortable during treatment, post-procedure recovery in intense heat can be less pleasant, particularly after oral surgery. Swelling can be more pronounced in hot weather, and you may prefer to stay indoors more than planned.
Practical considerations for summer visits:
- Flight prices peak: £80 to £150 return from London
- Hotel prices peak: €65 to €120 per night for 4-star hotels
- Tirana empties slightly: Many Albanians leave for the coast in August, and some businesses (though rarely dental clinics) reduce hours
- Beach option: Warmest sea temperatures (25 to 27°C) if you want to extend your trip to the coast
If you must visit in July or August, book your clinic appointment well in advance and confirm the schedule. Consider travelling early in the morning and resting during the hottest hours (1 to 5 pm).
Winter: November to February
Winter is the budget traveller's sweet spot. Flights and hotels are at their cheapest, and clinics have the most open availability. But the weather is a factor.
November and March
These transitional months are underrated. Temperatures are cool but manageable (6 to 15°C). The city is quieter. Cafes and restaurants are open. You will not sunbathe, but you will save considerably on flights and accommodation, and your clinic can often offer same-week appointments.

December to February
Tirana winters are grey and chilly (2 to 10°C) with occasional rain. Not ideal for sightseeing, but perfectly fine for dental treatment if your primary goal is getting the work done at the lowest possible cost. Clinics operate normally (except around Christmas and New Year), and you will have maximum scheduling flexibility.
Advantages of a winter trip:
- Return flights from £20 to £60
- 4-star hotels from €30 to €55 per night
- Same-week or next-day appointments often available
- Fewer tourists, more personal attention at the clinic
- Tirana's indoor attractions (museums, restaurants, coffee shops) are excellent
Disadvantages:
- Short daylight hours (sunset around 4:30 to 5:00 pm)
- Cool, damp weather limits outdoor activities
- Beach trips not feasible

Dates to Avoid
Mark these dates when planning your trip. Clinics may be closed or operating with reduced staff:
- 1-2 January: New Year (clinics closed)
- 14 March: Summer Day (public holiday)
- 22 March: Nowruz (public holiday)
- 1 May: Labour Day (clinics may close)
- 28 November: Albanian Independence Day (clinics closed)
- 29 November: Liberation Day (clinics closed)
- 25 December: Christmas (clinics closed)
- Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha: Dates vary annually. Some clinics close for 1 to 2 days
- Orthodox and Catholic Easter: Dates vary. Some staff may take time off
The safest approach: once you have narrowed your preferred month, contact your clinic and confirm they are fully operational during your intended dates before booking flights.
Seasonal Pricing: What You Actually Save
The difference between peak and off-peak travel costs can be substantial. Here is a real comparison for a 6-night dental trip from London:
| Cost Component | Winter (Jan–Feb) | Shoulder (Apr–May) | Peak (Jul–Aug) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Return flight | £30 | £65 | £120 |
| Hotel (6 nights, 4-star) | €210 (£180) | €360 (£310) | €540 (£465) |
| Food and transport | €150 (£130) | €180 (£155) | €200 (£170) |
| Total travel costs | £340 | £530 | £755 |
| Dental treatment (example: 2 implants) | €900 (£775) | €900 (£775) | €900 (£775) |
| Grand total | £1,115 | £1,305 | £1,530 |
Note that dental treatment costs remain the same year-round. The savings from off-peak travel come entirely from cheaper flights and accommodation. The difference between a winter and summer trip is approximately £400, which may matter if you are on a tight budget.

Planning Your Trip Around Treatment Type
The type of dental treatment you need affects how long your trip should be, which in turn affects the best time to visit.
Short Trips (3 to 4 Days)
Suitable for: teeth whitening, dental fillings, single crowns, extractions, check-ups.
These treatments are completed in 1 to 2 appointments. A long weekend is sufficient. Fly out Thursday, treat Friday and Saturday, fly home Sunday or Monday. Any month works well for short trips.
Medium Trips (5 to 7 Days)
Suitable for: multiple crowns, veneers (4 to 10 teeth), dental implants (1 to 3), root canal treatment.
This is the most common dental tourism trip length. You will have 2 to 4 clinic appointments spread across the week, with rest and sightseeing days between. The shoulder months (April, May, September, October) are ideal because the weather supports comfortable recovery and pleasant exploration of Tirana between appointments.
Longer Trips (8 to 14 Days)
Suitable for: full smile makeovers (10+ veneers), All-on-4 or All-on-6, full mouth rehabilitation, multiple implants with same-trip crown fitting.
Extensive treatments benefit from building in recovery time. Consider splitting the trip: treatment in Tirana during the first week, then a few days on the Albanian Riviera or in Berat/Gjirokaster for recovery and tourism. Summer or early autumn works best for this combined approach.

Booking Tips for the Best Rates
A few practical tips to keep travel costs as low as possible:
- Book flights 4 to 8 weeks ahead. Wizz Air and Ryanair release their cheapest fares in this window. Last-minute bookings are rarely cheaper for Albanian routes.
- Fly midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are typically 20 to 30% cheaper than Friday or Sunday flights.
- Book accommodation directly. Many Tirana hotels offer better rates through their own website or WhatsApp than through Booking.com, particularly for stays of 5 nights or more.
- Ask your clinic for hotel recommendations. Empire Dental Clinic has negotiated rates with several partner hotels in the Blloku district, offering dental tourism patients discounted nightly rates.
- Consider Airbnb for longer stays. For trips of 10 days or more, a serviced apartment in central Tirana can be significantly cheaper than a hotel and offers kitchen facilities for lighter meals during recovery.
