The Question Every Dental Tourist Should Ask
When patients consider dental treatment abroad, one of the first and most important questions is: how qualified are the dentists? It is a fair question. You are trusting someone with your health, your appearance, and your comfort. You want to know that the person holding the drill has training that matches or exceeds what you would expect at home.
For Albania, the answer is reassuring. Albanian dental education is rigorous, EU-aligned, and increasingly international. Many of the dentists you will meet in Tirana's private clinics have trained not only at Albania's own excellent dental faculty but also at some of Europe's most respected universities.
The Foundation: University of Medicine, Tirana
The Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Medicine, Tirana (Universiteti i Mjekesise, Tirane, or UMT) is the primary institution training Albania's dentists. Founded in 1952, it is one of the oldest dental faculties in the Balkans.
The dental programme is a 5-year integrated master's degree. Students complete approximately 5,000 hours of study combining:
- Pre-clinical sciences (Years 1 to 2): Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and pathology. These are the same foundational sciences taught in dental schools across Europe.
- Clinical sciences (Years 3 to 5): Restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, paediatric dentistry, and oral medicine. Students treat real patients under supervision from their third year.
- Research component: A final thesis or research project is required for graduation.
The curriculum follows the Bologna Process framework, which Albania joined in 2003. This means the degree structure, credit system, and academic standards are aligned with those of EU member states. The goal, now being progressively achieved, is full compatibility with European higher education standards.
EU Alignment: What the Bologna Process Means
The Bologna Process is not just a bureaucratic agreement. It has practical implications for the quality of dental education:
- Standardised curriculum: The dental programme covers the same core subjects as dental schools in Italy, Germany, France, and the UK
- Quality assurance: Albanian universities undergo periodic external evaluation to maintain standards
- Credit transfer: The ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) allows academic credits to be recognised across borders
- Mobility: Albanian dental students and graduates can apply for postgraduate positions in EU universities, and many do
Albania is currently an EU candidate country, with accession negotiations actively progressing. Full EU membership would bring automatic mutual recognition of professional qualifications, including dental degrees. In the meantime, Albanian dentists who wish to practise in EU countries can do so through equivalency examinations, and many have done so successfully.
Postgraduate Training: Where Albanian Dentists Specialise
This is where Albanian dental education becomes particularly impressive. A very large proportion of Albanian dentists, especially those working in private clinics serving international patients, complete postgraduate specialisation abroad.
The most common destinations for postgraduate training are:
Italy
Italy is the most popular destination for Albanian dental postgraduates, for several reasons: geographic proximity (a short flight or even a ferry ride), strong academic links between Albanian and Italian universities, widespread Italian language fluency among Albanians, and the high regard in which Italian dental programmes are held internationally.
Albanian dentists commonly complete specialisations in implantology, prosthodontics, and cosmetic dentistry at Italian universities including La Sapienza (Rome), University of Bologna, University of Milan, and University of Padua.
Germany
Germany's reputation for precision engineering extends to its dental education. German dental programmes are known for rigorous clinical training and evidence-based practice. Albanian dentists who train in Germany often specialise in oral surgery, endodontics, and advanced implant techniques.
Austria and Switzerland
The University of Vienna and several Swiss institutions attract Albanian dental graduates for specialisation in orthodontics, periodontics, and advanced prosthodontics. Swiss and Austrian training programmes are among the most selective in Europe.
United Kingdom
Some Albanian dentists complete postgraduate training, fellowships, or diploma programmes through UK institutions. The Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh and London) and various UK universities offer advanced qualifications that Albanian dentists pursue.

Empire Dental Clinic: Our Team's Qualifications
At Empire Dental Clinic, our commitment to international-standard training is reflected in our team.
Dr. Gersi completed his dental degree at the University of Medicine, Tirana, followed by advanced postgraduate training in implantology and prosthetic dentistry. His ongoing education includes regular attendance at European implantology conferences and hands-on workshops with leading implant system manufacturers.
Dr. Brikena brings additional specialisation in aesthetic dentistry and orthodontics, with training that combines Albanian dental education with European continuing education programmes.
Both dentists speak fluent English and Italian in addition to Albanian, which is a direct result of their international training and professional networks.
Full details of our team's qualifications, training history, and areas of expertise are available on our team page.
Continuing Education: The Requirement to Keep Learning
A dental degree is the starting point, not the finish line. Dentistry evolves rapidly, with new materials, techniques, and technologies emerging every year. Albanian dentists are required to complete continuing professional development (CPD) to maintain their licence to practise.
In practice, this means:
- Annual CPD hours: Dentists must complete a minimum number of accredited training hours each year
- Conferences: Many Albanian dentists attend international conferences including the EAO (European Association for Osseointegration), FDI World Dental Congress, and regional implantology and orthodontic symposia
- Manufacturer training: Dentists using specific implant systems (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem) complete regular training provided by the manufacturers to stay current with the latest protocols
- Peer review: Professional associations such as the Albanian Dental Association facilitate knowledge sharing and peer review among practitioners
How This Compares to the UK and Western Europe
UK dentists complete a 5-year BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) degree followed by foundation training. European dentists follow similar 5 to 6 year programmes. The Albanian programme matches this duration and covers the same core subjects.
The key difference is not in the quality of training but in the cost of living and operating a dental practice. Albanian dentists earn less than their UK or German counterparts in absolute terms, but they have a high standard of living relative to Albanian costs. This is the fundamental reason why dental treatment in Albania costs 60 to 80% less than in Western Europe: it is an economic difference, not a quality difference.
The implant systems are the same. The porcelain is the same. The training is comparable and often enhanced by international postgraduate study. What differs is the price.
How to Verify Your Dentist's Credentials
When choosing a dental clinic abroad, you should always check your dentist's qualifications. Here is how:
- Check the clinic's website: Reputable clinics display their dentists' degrees, specialisations, and training on their team page
- Ask directly: A good dentist will be happy to discuss their education and training. If a clinic is evasive about qualifications, consider it a warning sign.
- Verify with the Albanian Order of Dentists: The Urdhri i Stomatologut (Albanian Order of Dentists) maintains a register of licensed practitioners
- Look for implant system certification: Dentists who place Straumann, Nobel Biocare, or other major implant brands should have documented training from those manufacturers
- Check for conference attendance and publications: Active professionals attend conferences, participate in workshops, and some publish research. This shows ongoing engagement with the profession.
